Languages : English (eng) Original Language : English (eng) Descriptors: Organized crime Class number: 364.106 Abstract: Ever dynamic, organized crime continues to change, with efforts to combat one aspect of the phenomenon, the American Mafia, reaching high levels of prosecutorial success and a resulting decline in importance. Meanwhile, criminal organizations operating on a global scale have become more sophisticated and more threatening, and additional crime groups have been added to the pan¬theon we refer to as organized crime. This edition reflects changes that have occurred and updates information and analyses of organized crime and efforts to deal with it. The decline in political order and deteriorating economic circumstances have led to a growing underground economy that habituates people to working outside the legal framework. Easy access to arms, the massive flow of emigrants and refugees, and the normal difficulties involved in accomplishing meaningful international cooperation are working to the advantage of criminal organizations. And the "rise of better-organized, internationally based criminal groups with vast financial resources is creating a new threat to the stability and security of international systems" (Godson and Olson 1995: 19). "Many international and transnational criminal organizations are continuing to expand their networks and links with other criminal organizations throughout the world, allowing the larger organizations to become increasingly powerful, technically sophisticated and global in their approach" (INTERPOL at Work 2003: 17). Added into this mix is the global problem of terrorism as organized crime and criminal organizations with political goals overlap. When we first catch sight of it in historical records, it is the speech of some none-too-civilized tribes on the continent of Europe along the North Sea. Of course, it had a still earlier history, going back perhaps to somewhere in Eastern Europe or western Asia, and long before that to origins we can only speculate about. From those murky and undisting-uished beginnings, English has become the most widespread language in the world, used my more peoples for more purposes than any other language on Earth. How the English language changed from being the speech of a few small tribes to becoming the major language of the Earth-and in the process itself changed radically-is the subject of this book. Contents note: Language and the English Language An Introduction; The Sounds of Current English; Letters and Sounds : A brief History of Writing; The Backgrounds of English; The Old English Period; The Middle English Period; The Early Modern English Period : Society, Spellings, and Sounds; The Early Modern English Period : Forms, Syntax, and Usage; Late Modern English; Words and Meanings; New Words from Old; Foreign Elements in the English Word Stock; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=16195 Hold
