Social conflictClass number: 305.8 Abstract: The establishment of durable, democratic institutions constitutes one of the major challenges of our age. As countless contemporary examples have shown, it requires far more than simply the holding of free elections. The consolidation of a legitimate constitutional order is difficult to achieve in any society, but it is especially problematic in societies with deep social cleavages. This book provides an authoritative and systematic analysis of the politics of so- called 'deeply divided societies' in the post Cold War era. From Bosnia to South Africa, Northern Ireland to Iraq, it explains why such places are so prone to political violence, and demonstrates why - even in times of peace - the fear of violence continues to shape attitudes, entrenching divisions in societies that already lack consensus on their political institutions. Combining intellectual rigour and accessibility, it examines the challenge of establishing order and justice in such unstable environments, and critically assesses a range of political options available, from partition to power-sharing and various initiatives to promote integration. The Politics of Deeply Divided Societies is an ideal resource for students of comparative politics and related disciplines, as well as anyone with an interest in the dynamics of ethnic conflict and nationalism. Contents note: The characteristics of deeply divided societies; Violence, order and justice; The challenge of policing; Limits to integration; Partition and population transfer; Power-sharing and political accommodation; External mediation. European Union countries - Foreign relations
International relations - Political aspectsClass number: 327.094 Abstract: European Union Foreign Policy in a Changing World provides a clear introduction to the complexities of contemporary European Union foreign policy, and offers a fresh and distinctive perspective on the nature of the European Union's international identity. Opening with a discussion of the EU's evolution as an international actor, the book goes on to explore how and why the EU pursues five core foreign policy objectives, namely: the encouragement of regional cooperation: the advancement of human rights: the promotion of democracy and good governance: the prevention of violent conflicts: and the fight against international crime. By analysing the various means the EU has used to achieve these objectives, Karen Smith considers the extent to which the EU has pursued these goals consistently. She concludes with an assessment of the uniqueness of the EU as a global actor and the effectiveness of its foreign policy, by comparing its activities with those of other international actors pursuing similar objectives. This well-written and thoroughly researched textbook should appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of European politics, British politics, foreign policy studies, international relations and related disciplines. Contents note: Introduction; The Evolution of the EU as an International Actor; The EU’s Foreign Policy Instruments; Regional Cooperation; Human Rights; Democracy and Good Governance; Conflict Prevention; The Fight Against International Crime; Conclusion; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=16720 Hold
