Abstract: | Abstract
The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effectiveness of using vocabulary games on developing students' ESL vocabulary knowledge. In addition, it examines vocabulary games' motivational impact among 5th grade students and teachers' awareness regarding the pedagogical value of educational games. In other words, the overarching aim of this study is to define the impact of vocabulary word-games in students' learning outcomes, by comparing their overall achievement with the traditional vocabulary teaching practices. The target population of the study covered one hundred and eight 5th grade ESL students who were attending public schools. The accessible population was assigned in two groups: control and experimental groups, therefore two teaching approaches were provided to ESL learners in order to determine which one of them will be more superior to another in developing students' vocabulary proficiency and increasing their level of motivation. The control group received the traditional pedagogical instructions, basically the pedagogical practices that did not include game-based vocabulary instruction; meanwhile the experimental group was set on developing an extensive English vocabulary by using different word games. The research used three instruments during the data collection process: the teachers' questionnaire which elicited teachers' perceptions and reactions towards the effectiveness and motivational impact of games in learning, a students' questionnaire to determine their level of learning motivation in a game-based approach and a post-control test to examine which of the vocabulary instructional techniques is superior to another on enhancing students' vocabulary proficiency and level of learning motivation. The results indicated that the use of vocabulary word-games within the ESL classrooms impacts word knowledge comprehension and students' overall learning. Students' questionnaire findings demonstrated that most of the respondents were highly motivated in learning vocabulary in the game-based classroom setting. Moreover, the analysis of teachers' responses presented ESL teachers' awareness of the overall pedagogical values of educational games in second language teaching. Keywords: vocabulary, motivation, game-based vocabulary instructions. |
