This master thesis deals with the benefits of incorporating culture, and the practical techniques for teaching cultural issues and elements in teaching English as a second language (ESL) classes. This is a quantitative research that has been done in a secondary school in the municipality of Kacanik, and where the involvement of cultural issues and elements have been exploited, in the practice of techniques that they involve in teaching of the English.. The data were collected from four hundred learners involved in the research. Those learners were from sixteen different classes, twenty-five of them from each class, and were chosen in a random way. The survey was anonymous, and legal. For data collection, a questionnaire was used, consisting of five parts (for learners) as well as semi-structured interviews for teachers. We also observed 40 hours of teaching. We used statistical methods for data analysis. The findings have resulted to be consistent with the research questions. Also it has been shown that the learners are a little or not at all familiar with the cultural issues and elements of learning English as a foreign language whereas for the techniques, materials and types of activities, learners have been more familiar with the classic ones and less with the modern ones. The teachers also used more the classical techniques and activities and very little the modern ones. The biggest obstacle in this research was the reluctance of teachers to engage more. This research aimed to investigate the benefits that the inclusion of cultural issues and elements in teaching of English language in ESL classes offers. The purpose of this study was to explore effective access of culture in English classroom teaching. As we expected, data collection, processing and their analysis did not represent any obstacles, and resulted more or less to prooving the hypothesis. The results confirmed that there is a need to encourage teachers to make efforts for greater involvement of cultural issues and elements in matters of teaching. Also, from this research it appears that teachers in their curriculum, especially in their practices rarely include cultural issues and elements (that was noticed more during the observations). Also, from this thesis it appears that the benefits of inclusion cultural issues and elements in teaching of English language are numerous and indisputable. As an advantage in carrying out this research we can point out the excellent cooperation of learners (that was a surprise), also the cooperation and provision of conditions for research by the managers of this school. But, the disadvantage was the poor cooperation of teachers, with a few exceptions. The results showed that the classical methods and techniques were common, and advanced methods and techniques were rarely or not at all used. Therefore the benefits that learners would have in that case were smaller. From this thesis we came into conclusion that in this school the inclusion of cultural issues and elements in teaching of ESL classes is very low, so the benefits for the learners of this school are not enough. Therefore, we recommend managers to encourage teachers to include more materials and topics regarding cultural issues and elements in their curricula. In this case the benefits of using cultural issues and elements would be increased, and would be helpful to learners.Key words: Benefits, foreign language, cultural textures, cultural issues, cultural elements, teaching techniques, activities, learners, teachers, percpetions, ESL classes, information sources, activity types, selling points. | Record link: | https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=20116 |
