Abstract: | Anyone who attempts to write a book of this sort owes an inexpressible debt to his original teachers, to his colleagues, to his students over the years, and to the authors of uncounted books and papers he has read. I would like to acknowledge a diffuse debt of gratitude to the many individuals who belong in these categories for me. I think, however, that I should mention a special debt to my present colleagues and students at Berkeley, as well as to my former students Joseph L. Malone and Michael S. Flier, whose detailed and perceptive criticisms of earlier versions of this work were especially helpful and whose encouragement was a major factor in enabling me to overcome my own periodic discouragement. I am grateful to Judith Kujawa and Susan Schwartz for their help in typing the manuscript. |
