The aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of games in vocabulary learning for primary school teenagers. The study involves seventh and eighth grade primary school teenagers. Seventh and eighth grade students are divided into experimental and control groups. Over a period of two months, experimental groups play vocabulary games intended to practice new vocabulary and games aimed to revise students' current vocabulary. Experimental and control groups learned the same new vocabulary, but different techniques were utilized. Experimental groups practice the new vocabulary through games, and control groups practice it through traditional methods, such as word lists, repetition, translation or gap filling exercises. The study uses four instruments: teachers' questionnaire, students' questionnaire, tests and class observations. Fifteen English language teachers are involved in the study as survey responders. The Students' questionnaire is done with all the teenagers that were involved in the experimental groups. Both the control and experimental groups were given the same vocabulary tests and this instrument assesses students' acquisition of new vocabulary. Observation brings data from experimental groups; it presents students' reaction, participation, interest and classroom atmosphere while practicing and revising vocabulary games which were performed. The results of the study show that games are beneficial activities for teenage students. Results show that games are effective activities for vocabulary retention. It is also illustrated that games are suitable activities that affect teenagers' motivation, engagement and participation in EFL classes. | Record link: | https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=19792 |
