Abstract: | This volume is based on papers presented at a conference that itself was the outcome of a conversation in December of 2016, in the lounge of the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences (MANU), among Academicians Professor Victor Friedman, Professor Marjan Markovikj and Professor Zuzana Topolińska (all of MANU, and of its Research Center for Areal Linguistics [ICAL]) and Professor Veton Latifi, Director of the Max van der Stoel Scientific Institute of Southeast European University (SEEU). As it so happened, our conversation took place the day after elections in the Republic of Macedonia had ended a decade of rule by a political party whose most recent political campaign had included, among other things, the slogan "Vote Against Bilingualism" (see Friedman, this volume). It was in this atmosphere that we discussed the idea of organizing a conference on multiculturalism and language contact and made concrete plans for its realization. |
