Abstract: | ABSTRACT
The objective of this paper is to study the implementation of the Communicative Approach in teaching grammar. Following the theories on language teaching methodology and the development of the Communicative Approach, as well as the attitude towards teaching grammar we can clarify the necessity and effectiveness of adopting the Communicative Approach in teaching grammar and the language in general. The respondents for the study consisted of eighteen randomly selected teachers from five different public secondary schools in the region of Tetovo, Republic of Macedonia. The research instruments comprised of classroom observation, interview and survey questionnaire. The observation was used to carefully watch the classroom practices and conditions. The interview was intended to discover teachers' perceptions and attitudes towards teaching grammar and the language in general communicatively and to identify certain difficulties they encounter in the process of teaching. The survey questionnaire served to make a comparison teachers' perceptions of the communicative versus the traditional teaching concept. The data were collected, analyzed and reported on descriptively. And it was determined that some inconsistencies exist between teachers' beliefs and their actual practices. It was found that teachers are fully aware of the principles of the Communicative Approach; nevertheless they fail to successfully implement them in their classrooms. Also it was concluded that the Communicative approach in teaching grammar is not implemented and applied successfully in the secondary schools in the region of Tetovo due to various socio-economic constraints and cultural influences. |
