Abstract: | The word "literature" comes from the Latin word littera, litterae, which means "letter", and it is similar to the Old Greek word. In current parlance the Latin etymological basis has codified the usage of the word literature by means of metonymic transformation of its meaning, as a linguistic-artistic practice par exellence or as belletristic. The Hellenic basis has remained related to the metalinguistic, philological and linguistic approach to the study of language and its structure, the traditional grammar. The Latin term literature is equivalent to the Old Greek term grammar.
