Abstract: | In 2007 the European Doctoral Seminar had been held second time in Albania, after 2003 in the new building of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Tirana now it had been organized in the South of Albania, in Saranda. When the idea of the EDS had been born in 2000, it was the main aim to establish institutional conditions for young researcher from several countries to discuss the ideas and results of their Ph D research. After seven years there is no doubt about the success of the European Doctoral Seminar. Year by year organizers could welcome around 20 Ph D students, some of them have already defended their theses and therefore finished their studies. Among the former participants one can find young researchers in economic institutes, members of universities' staff or they are working for the government in administrative fields. Comparing the papers contained in this issue of Public Economics Series with those of earlier conferences it can be seen some cyclical development. In the first years most participants have chosen more general and theoretical themes. In a second phase beginning with EDS No.4 the papers had been written about the analysis of actual and concrete problems arising in the newly established market economies. Stimulation of innovation processes, demographics problems in higher and in lower developed economies, problems of economic policy have been discussed as well as the real possibilities to enter the European Union or the Euro area. In Saranda it could be experienced again a change to more theoretical approaches. May be that the options based on the theories and models of the first years had been exhausted and researchers are faced now with qualitatively new problems requiring again new theories and methods? However, it was a pleasure to see a new kind of synthesis in Saranda: After research be¬longing to the fields of more or less abstract economic theory in the last years empirical research had been emphasized more and more, but in 2007 most of the participants presented a theoretical problem coming from the "translation" of actual economic problems into the language of theory. Consequently, topics and questions raised in the presentations or in the discussions have been formulated much more exactly than this could experienced in earlier seminars, making research more efficient. |
