Abstract: | Some while ago two-known professors of English literature, E. Legouis and L. Cazamian, pointed out the following statement: “The literature of English language, one of the literatures richest in original beauty is the most extensive ever known to the world.” After many years of teaching English literature, it has been my aim to present the history of English literature, not as a catalogue names and dates, but rather as a living tradition, as something that really happened, and as vital now in a changed world as it has ever been. And though this book is more or less an outline, it does not attempt to cover the whole field. It has confined itself to the English literature of various Anglophone and English speaking countries. |
Contents note: | Anglo-Saxon and Norman period; The age of Chaucer; The revival of learning; The age of Elizabeth; The age of Milton; The restoration period; Augustian classic and sentimental age; The age of romanticism (1800-1850); The Victorian age (1850-1900); Literature of XX century; Bibliography. |
