Abstract: | Combating international organized crime is the utmost priority of the Governments both at national and international level. Accordingly, the Treaty on European Union (TEU), 1992, in its Title V, proclaims that the goal of the Union is to provide for the citizens enhanced security in the area of freedom and justice through development of joint action among the State parties in the area of law enforcement and judicial cooperation on criminal matters. In the same spirit, numerous activities are undertaken by international organizations to fight against organized crime. The reduction of organized crime requires, in particular, the adoption of a relevant legal framework, and initiation of measures and actions for its implementation in practice through direct cooperation between the states. Organized crime is a complex problem which inevitably calls for a wide range of measures to be taken both by the state and the civil society. The institutional measures to prevent, sanction and suppress organized crime primarily consist of special investigative actions, confiscation, protection of witnesses and other measures. One of the most important areas in combating organized crime is the protection of witnesses and collaborators of justice. |
