Democracy--Italy
Regionalism--ItalyClass number: 306.2 Abstract: "Making democracy work"- why do some democratic governments succeed and others fail? In a book that has received attention from policy makers and civic activists in America and around the world, Robert Putnam and his collaborators offer empirical evidence for the importance of “civic community” in developing successful institutions. Their focus is on a unique experiment begun in 1970 when Italy created new governments for each of its regions. After spending two decades analyzing the efficacy of these governments in such fields as agriculture, housing, and health services, they reveal patterns of associoationism, trust, and cooperation that facilitate good governance and economic prosperity. Contents note: Studying institutional performance: a voyage of inquiry; Charting the voyage; Methods of inquiry; Overview of the book; Changing the Rules: Two decades of institutional development: creating regional government; The regional political elite:” a way of doing politics”; The deepening of regional autonomy; Putting down roots: the region and its constituents conclusions; Measuring institutional performance: twelve indicators of institutional performance; Coherence and reliability of the index of institutional performance; Institutional performance and constituency evaluations conclusions; Explaining institutional performance: socioeconomic modernity; The civic community: some theoretical speculations; The civic community: testing the theory social and political life in the civic community; Other explanations for institutional success?; Tracing the roots of the civic community: the civic legacies of medieval Itlay; Civic traditions after unification; Measuring the durability of civic traditions; Social capital and institutional success: dilemmas of collective action; Social capital, trust, and rotating credit associations; Norms of reciprocity and networks of civic engagement; History and institutional performance: two social equilibria; Lessons from the Italian regional experiment; Research methods; Statistical evidence on attitude change among regional councilors; Institutional performance(1978-1985); Regional abbreviations used in scattergrams; Local government performance(1982-1986) and regional government performance(1978-1985); Traditions of civic involvement(1860-1920) Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=16571 Hold

Political anthropologyClass number: 306.2 Abstract: This book had its origins in 1980 when a sociologist friend who was editing the multivolume Handbook of Political Behavior asked me to supply the entry on Political Anthropology. My protestations that I knew no more about the subject than any other budding anthropologist fell on deaf ears. He wanted nothing fancy or even particularly erudite, just a workmanlike overview of the subject matter and theoretical orientation of the sub discipline. How hard could that be? Barely a year out of graduate school and I need of publications to beef up an emaciated vitae, I finally agreed to do it. I thought I could seek out a few overview books and an encyclopedia article or two on the subject, peruse the most important works in the bibliography and write it up in short order. Contents note: The development of political anthropology; Types of postindustrial political systems; The evolution of the state; Religion in politics : Sacred Legitimacy, divine resistance; Structure and process; The individual in the political arena : action theory and game theory; The power of the people : resistance and rebellion; Gender and power; The politics of identity : ethnicity and nationalism; Modernism, postmodernism and the emerging synthesis; From modernization to globalization; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=15946 Hold

SociologyClass number: 306.2 Abstract: Before the current global era it is impossible to imagine that comparable events (like 11 September 2001) could have occurred, reflecting as they do our new-found interdependence. The rise of global terrorism, like world-wide networks involving in money- laundering, drug- running and other forums of organized crime, are all parts of the dark side of globalisation.
