Whereas the Biographical Dictionary of Neo-Marxism also published by Greenwood Press- encompasses nontraditional philosophical variations of Marxian theory, this book focuses only on materials or orthodox Marxism. Since most contemporary Marxists and Marxist parties are materialist, the problem of deciding who to include has been vexing. two factors have a particularly complicated the selection process. First, once materialist Marxism is established in the work of its seminal theorists, very little else of philosophical interest or significance is produced. And second orthodox parties everywhere are represented by ideologues committed to rationalizing, justifying, and occasionally modifying Marxian theory to meet current national or regional conditions. Although these intellectual efforts may be interesting, they rarely transcend in significance the narrow geographical and temporal interests involved, and they are simply too numerous to all be included here. This dictionary therefor concentrates almost equally on philosophy and strategy. Seeking to minimize the risk of redundancy, I have included only the major theoretical formulations of materialist Marxism as well as the significant and influential application of materialism to concrete national conditions. One consequence is the extensive coverage given Third World Marxists, whose practical contributions have retooled materialist Marxism for the postcolonial liberation struggles in Africa, Asia, and Latin America-without, however, altering its philosophical base. Ideja e një reforme të këtij sistemi gjendej kudo nga pak që prej një çerek shekulli dhe ushqente në të gjitha format një revizionizëm veprues, por gjithnjë respektues të epërsisë parimore të socializmit mbi kapitalizmin. As armiqtë e socializmit nuk mundën të imagjinojnë mundë-sinë e zhdukjes së regjimit sovjetik dhe "tretjen" e Revolucionit të Tetorit; aq më pak që kjo thyerje do të kishte në zanafillë nismën e partisë së vetme në pushtet. Megjithatë, universi komunist u zhbë vetë. Mund ta shohitn edhe nga një shenjë tjetër e tatëpjetës: nuk mbeten më veçse njerëzit, të cilët duke mos u mposhtur, kanë kaluar nga një botë në tjetrën, të rilindur në një sis-tem tjetër, ithtarë të tregut e të zgjedhjeve, ose të riqarkulluar në nacionali-zëm. Por nga përvoja e tyre e mëparshme nuk mbijetoi asgjë. Popujt që kanë dalë nga komunizmi duken si të përndjekur nga mohimi i regjimit në të cilin kanë jetuar, edhe pse kanë trashëguar doket dhe zakonet e tij. Lufta e klasave, diktatura e proletariatit, marksizëm-leninizmi, janë zhdukur në dobi të asaj çka ata supozohej se kishin zëvendësuar: prona borgjeze, shteti demokratik liberal, të drejtat e njeriut, liria e sipërmarrjes. Nga regjimet e lindura nga Revolucioni i Tetorit nuk mbijetoi asgjë përveç asaj që ata kishin mohuar. Fundi i Revolucionit Rus ose zhdukja e Perandorisë Sovjetike, zbulon një "tabula rasa" pa asnjë ngjashmëri me atë çka kishin lënë fundi i Revolucionit Francez ose rënia e Perandorisë Napolëoniane. Njerëzit e Termidorit kishin festuar barazinë qytetare dhe botën borgjeze. Deri në disfatën përfundimtare që i kishte asgjësuar të gjitha ato që ai kishte fituar gjatë ditëve fatlume Napolëon-i kishte qenë një një pushtues i pangopur, një iluzionist i ngadhënjimit. Por ditën kur i humbi të gjitha, ai la në Evropë një brazdë të gjerë kujtimesh, idesh dhe institucionesh nga të cilat ishin frymëzuar edhe vetë ata që e kishin luftuar.
