Abstract: | Seldom do books have to be written that on so few pages detail so many acts of violence committed by the members of an ethnic minority against a more numerous people with whom it has for centuries lived on the same territory. Such books offer no pleasure to those who are forced by circumstances to write them, and cer tainly not to those who read them. And yet, they do have to be written, just as this book has had to be written -- not in order circumstantially to oppose the deranged ideas of the »genocidal ten dencies of the Croatian people« with equal and opposite theses about the »genocidal tendencies of the Serbs who live in Croatia,« but to bear public witness against crimes committed against innocent peo ple and against the property that it has usually taken them years of hard work to acquire, against going back into the past at a time when others are looking to the future, against darkness and blind ness of all kinds, which are spreading in such a rapid tempo over this land. |
