Abstract: Filozofia shihet si një prototip i disiplinave akademike, me praktikuesit e saj, të mbyllur në mënyrë të vendosur në kullat e tyre të fildishta, e veçuar nga problemet e jetës reale. Karikatura qëndron në shumë mënyra larg së vërtetës. Çështjet e filozofisë pa asnjë dallim mund të jenë të thella dhe shpesh herë të vështira, por gjithashtu ato janë edhe të rëndësishme. Shkenca, për shembull, ka potencialin për të mbushur dyqanin e lodrave me lloj lloj lodrash të mrekullueshme, por fatkeqësisht ajo nuk na ka dhënë dhe nuk mund të japë librin e udhëzimeve. Abstract: Aristotle was born in 384 B.c. in the little town of Stagira, the modern Stavró, on the north-east coast of the peninsula of Chalcidice. An attempt has sometimes been made to detect a non-Greek strain in his character and to attribute this to his northern birth; but Stagira was in the fullest sense a Greek town, colonized from Andros and Chalcis and speak ing a variety of the Ionic dialect. His father, Nicomachus, belonged to the clan or guild of the Asclepiadæ, and it seems probable: that the family had migrated from Messenia in the eighth or seventh century. The family of his mother, Phestis, belonged to Chalcis, where in his last days Aristotle took refuge from his enemies. His father was the physician and friend of Amyntas II of Macedonia, and it is possible that part of Aristotle's boyhood was spent at Pella, the royal seat. It is reasonable to trace Aristotle's interest in physical science and above all in biology to his descent from a medical family.

Abstract: With two exceptions, the studies of Descartes and Cartesian problems that are assembled here were written in English or by British or American philosophers. All of them were written after 1925, most of them fairly recently, and some have not been published before. The two exceptions are Émile Bréhier's “La Création des vérités éternelles dans le système de Descartes” and P. H. J. Hoenen's account of Descartes's Mechanicism in his Cosmologia. Both, which appear here in translation, contain interpretations that, to the best of my knowledge, are not represented in the rapidly growing literature on Descartes in English. They also have an important bearing on problems that are now being discussed. The discussions in general are directed toward views and argu ments in Descartes that have been of special concern to philosophers whose interest in Descartes has been related to, or has been conjoined with, their interest in the theory of knowl edge and adjoining problems in metaphysics. The theory of knowledge or epistemology has occupied-on some estimates preoccupied-a great many philosophers in English-speaking countries.
