E bëra ngaqë mendoj se Arbën Xhaferi i mungon këtij 100 vjetori, ngaqë besoj se ai është shqiptari që do t’i referohemi edhe 100 vite të tjera. Kam pasur fatin ta intervistoj ekskluzivisht për 12 vjet rresht në ekran dhe ndjej detyrimin të ndaj me lexuesin këtë libër, ku përfshihen opinionet, mendimet, idetë, vizionet, ëndrrat e Arbën Xhaferit, shpërndarë nëpër 12 intervista të rralla. Ndoshta jo gjithkush ka mundur ta shijojë plotësisht Arbën Xhaferin, ndërsa fliste në TVSH apo Top Channel, për shkak të sëmundjes që e pengonte të shprehej në formë ashtu si në përmbajtje. Por, kushdo e lexon këtë libër, s’kam dyshim se do t’ia propozojë një tjetri dhe tjetri një tjetri, ngase është platforma e tij më e plotë mbarëshqiptare, vështrimi më i qartë i dritës në fund të tunelit të Shqipërisë etnike. Arbën Xhaferi jo vetëm e shikonte Shqipërinë etnike gjeografikisht, por dinte të shpjegonte politikisht edhe teknikisht çfarë do ta shpejtonte krijimin e saj: “Shqipërinë etnike do ta krijojë dështimi i projekteve të kundërshtarëve tanë. Në asnjë institucion shqiptar as ushtarak, as politik, as shkencor nuk është hartuar projekti i krijimit të Shqipërisë etnike, por Shqipëria etnike vjen si pasojë e dështimit të projekteve joreale për Serbi të madhe apo për shtete etnocentrike”. Ndërsa kur shprehej me humor, jashtë kamerave, Xhaferi thoshte: “Më keq nga sa i kemi bërë vetes, nuk i bëjmë dot më. NationalismClass number: 949.6 Abstract: For decades, we have come to accept that nationalism formed the basis of the modern history of the Balkans. In this bold and controversial study, Pavlos Hatzopoulos turns this assumption on its head. Through a ground-breaking examination of the non-nationalist ideologies in the Balkans during the interwar period, Hatzopoulos calls into question the supposedly inherent connection between the Balkans and nationalism and argues that nationalism does not form the sole ordering principle of the modern history of the Balkan region. Focusing on the ideologies of communism, liberal internationalism and agrarianism, Hatzopoulos examines how these interact with nationalist ideology. He demonstrates how non-nationalist theories challenge the nationalist view of the Balkans as the sum of several national spaces. He even questions the nationalist understanding of the very term 'the Balkans'. "The Balkans Beyond Nationalism and Identity" revisits contemporary debates on a region that is still a European crisis point and challenges the nation-centric understanding that permeates it. In proposing a description of 'the Balkans' as a contested political concept, the book argues for a completely fresh interpretation of the region's composition. While traditional theorizing has focused on extreme expressions of nationalism thus making it an exotic and remote concern, Michael Billig turns his attention to the everyday, and so less visible, forms that are deeply ingrained in contemporary consciousness. Banal Nationalism asks why people do not forget their national identity. It contends that nationalism is constantly "flagged" in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. In a well-thought-out analysis, the author shows how assumptions of nationhood are regularly conveyed, often through small familiar turns of phrase, and how these reminders operate mindlessly beyond the level of conscious awareness, like the flag, which hangs unnoticed outside a public building. Banal Nationalism addresses these core features of nationalism while providing the reader with meaningful insights into their own nationality. Billig's elegantly written and broad-ranging book argues forcefully that nationalism continues to be a major ideological force in the contemporary world and will be essential reading for students and academics across the social sciences.
