Ky përkufizim fokusohet mbi konceptin e alfabetizmit mediatik, i cili e kupton median si një burim pozitiv informacioni dhe argëtimi, për çka gjithkush lipset të adoptojë ose të përmirësojë mjeshtëri të ndryshme e të shumta, si dhe dijet. Një pjesë e mirë e shoqërive të zhvilluara nuk e lënë këtë gjë në dorën e individit, i cili të përkujdeset në mënyrë të pavarur dhe të menaxhojë në mënyrë jo sistematike përfitimin e kësaj dijeje. Këto shoqëri iniciojnë një shumëllojshmëri strategjish sociale për parashtrimin e alfabetizmit mediatik në një hulli me shembuj pozitivë dhe rekomandimet ndërkombëtare. Në vitin 1970 UNESCO-ja ndërmori nismën për edukimin në media. Calls for accountability, a lack of agreement among scholars as to the exact definition of "Civil Society" and growing attention to civil actors as alternatives to governments, made the time ripe for self-analysis. The CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) project is the result of rigorous self-examination by civil society actors around the world. How is something as vast and contested as civil society, measured? The hundreds of members and partners of CIVICUS that contribute to the CSI have focused not only on measurable, short-term indicators, but also on long-term and more complex processes that are often neglected in evaluations of civil society. Concise profiles of 44 countries make up this, the first of two volumes (the second to be released later in 2007). It looks at factors such as civic engagement, democracy, corruption, social capital, gender equity and civil society's role in policy, and the overall health of each country's civil society.
