United NationsClass number: 341.23 Abstract: Act of Creation: Stephen C. Schlesinger- tells a pivotal and little-known story of how Secretary of State Edward Stettinius and the new American President, Harry Truman, picked up the pieces of the faltering campaign initiated by Franklin Roosevelt to create a "United Nations." Using secret agents, financial resources, and their unrivaled position of power, they overcame the intrigues of Stalin, the reservations of wartime allies like Winston Churchill, the discontent of smaller states, and a skeptical press corps to found the United Nations. The author reveals how the UN nearly collapsed several times during the conference over questions of which states should have power, who should be admitted, and how authority should be divided among its branches. By shedding new light on leading participants like John Foster Dulles, John F. Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson, Nelson Rockefeller, and E. B White, Act of Creation provides a fascinating tale of twentieth-century history not to be missed. United NationsClass number: 341.23 Abstract: his fully up-dated, third revised edition of Conforti's thought-provoking and challenging textbook, The Law and Practice of the United Nations, provides a comprehensive legal analysis of problems concerning membership, the structure of UN organs, their functions and their acts, taking into consideration the text of the Charter, its historical origins, and, particularly, the practice of the organs. Its main focus is on the practice of the Security Council. In particular the action of the Security Council under Chapter VII has been taken into account. The legal literature on Chapter VII - a literature which has grown enormously in recent times - has also been considered. The fact that the legal aspects of the action or the inaction of the Security Council have been discussed to an unusually large extent by ordinary people at the time of the war against Iraq and even later is worth noting. The importance of the role of the United Nations, and the content of the rules governing it, has become a leitmotiv of all debates on international politics. Consequently, the opinion often held in the past, according to which it was useless to deal with the legal aspects of the United Nations activity, can be considered as obsolete. Through the study and analysis of emerging legal issues of particular relevance to Africa, such as the creation of viable continental institutions capable of promoting unity and security for the peoples of the continent, the effective protection of human rights, the need for accountability for mass killings and massive violations of the rule of law, the promotion of a rule-based democratic culture, the role of African countries in a globalizing world economy and in international trade relations, the Yearbook strives to be responsive to the intellectual needs of African countries in the area of international law, and to the continuing struggle for creating an environment conducive to the rule of law throughout the continent. The Yearbook also provides ready access to the basic documents of African international organizations by regularly publishing the resolutions and decisions of regional and sub-regional organizations as well as the conventions, protocols and declarations adopted by pan-African agencies. his text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14983 Hold

United NationsClass number: 352.113 Abstract: Addresses frequent misunderstandings and criticisms of the UN by examining the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the only UN entity exclusively demand-based, one especially designed as a business service to focus on management and provision of services within the broader UN context, for example, by executing development and relief projects. Since 1994, UNOPS has been in continuous reform primarily because it nearly went out of business. This study, which takes stock of, analyzes, and explains the changes UNOPS has undergone the past few years, should be of interest to those within and outside the UN struggling with similar international and public management issues. Contents note: Investigating UNOPS; Background and Historical Perspective; UNDP/OPS: Origins and issues (1973-1992); Cutting the Umbilical Cord? The Merger with DDSMS; The Beginnings of a Strategy: The Leaky Boat; OPS in its Own; Strategic Planning for UNOPS Reform and its Implementation (1994-1996); Staff and Management: All Hands on Deck; The Mohonk Retreat: Confirmation and Fine-Tuning (1996); The Windwatch Retreat: One UNOPS (1997); Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=19149 Hold
