Yugoslav War, 1991-1995Class number: 949.702 Abstract: Yugoslavia was well positioned at the end of the cold war to make a successful transition to a market economy and westernization. Yet two years later, the country had ceased to exist, and devastating local wars were being waged to create new states. Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the start of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina in March 1992, the country moved toward disintegration at astonishing speed. In this book, Susan Woodward explains what happened to Yugoslavia and what can be learned from the response of outsiders to its crisis. Woodward's analysis is based on her first-hand experience before the country's collapse and then during the later stages of the Bosnian war as a member of the UN operation sent to monitor cease-fires and provide humanitarian assistance. Contents note: The bases of prewar stability; The politics of economic reform and global integration; Escalation; Interrupted democratization : the path to war; Western Intervention; The right to national Self-Determination; Ear : building states from nations; Stopping the Bosnian war; The dynamic of disintegration and nationalist war; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=15873 Hold

Yugoslav War, 1991-1995Class number: 949.703 Abstract: "Confronting the Yugoslav controversies"-this book presents the findings of an international research initiative of over 160 leading historians, social scientists, and jurists that brings together in one volume key evidence presented by all sides in the recent Yugoslav conflicts. It represents a direct assault on the proprietary interpretations that nationalist politicians and media have impressed on mass culture in each of the entities of the former Yugoslavia. Given gaps in the historical record and the existence of sometimes-contradictory evidence, the volume does not pretend to resolve all of the outstanding issues that divide the peoples of the former Yugoslavia. Yet, a combination of original research, the validation of existing evidence, and the exposure of widely held, bogus myths that anchor public perceptions should narrow considerably the parameters within which opposing sides can still engage in reasoned debate. Contents note: The dissolution of Yugoslavia (1986-91); Kosovo under autonomy (1974-1990); Independence and the fate of minorities (1991-92); "Ethnic cleansing" and war crimes (1991-95); The international community and the FRY/belligerents (1989-95); The safe areas (1992-1995); The war in Croatia (1991-1995); Kosovo under the Milosevic regime (1989-99); US/NATO intervention in Kosovo (1998-99); The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY); Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=15552 Hold

Yugoslavia - Territorial integrity - caseClass number: 949.71 Abstract: World War I created the state of Yugoslavia in 1918 and, in a series of wars, starting in 1991, Yugoslavia was replaced by several new and smaller states. The victors had always presented these wars as wars of national liberation: each war was fought for the sacred cause of national liberty. The book traces the origins of ideologies, appealing to the cause of national liberty, and outlines their use in the creation of new states and new political regimes in the Balkans. Contents note: A Common Homeland of the South Slavs; Yugoslavia at the Crossroads of Competing National Myths; The First Yugoslavia; World War II; The Second Yugoslavia; The Homeland Fragmented; From a Centralized State of Semi-confederation; The Loss of Legitimacy 1980-95; The Rise of Nationalism; The Rise of New National Elites 1987-90; On the Road to War; Wars for Independence; Bosnia-Herzegovina; Kosovo; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=15661 Hold
