NutritionClass number: 362.196 Abstract: Intensifying the Fight Against Malaria: The World Bank approaches malaria not only as a major public health issue but also as a broader development problem that costs Africa US$12 billion a year and helps keep families and communities in poverty. In 2005, the World Bank reaffirmed its commitment to malaria control by launching the Booster Program for Malaria Control in Africa, a 10-year initiative that in its first three years committed over US$470 million to malaria control on the continent. Focusing on a two-pronged approach of combining disease control interventions and health systems strengthening, the program has contributed significantly to the global effort to fight the disease. As Phase II (2008-2011) of the program begins, the World Bank will intensify its efforts to enable more countries in Africa to achieve and sustain large-scale impact on malaria. Major reductions in malaria deaths and illness are possible within the next five to seven years. Attacking the disease full-force with a front-loaded effort will have tremendous impact on health and economic outcomes. African nations and the global community are gearing up to meet this goal. As one of the top three funders of malaria control, the World Bank is called to play a lead role in this effort. Phase II of the Booster Program for Malaria Control in Africa is the Bank’s affirmative and emphatic response to this call. Economic assistance
International Development AssociationClass number: 338.1 Abstract: This document lays out the strategic framework for IDA's work in Africa over the next several years. The strategy evolved over more than a year, as a result of extensive consulatation with Africa Region staff, other Bank staff, external advisors, clients, partners and representatives of sivil society in the region. Primarily an internal document to help IDA defi8ne core priorities and future directions for its work in Africa, the framework's goal is to provide strategic direction for country and regional strategies, not a rigid template. The strategy is not an entirely new framework but rather grows out of IDA's evolving response to developments within the region, changes in the enabling environment for official development assistance, and lessons of experience. The strategy asks, "What are the core areas for IDA's engagement in Africa, given its comparative advantage?" and "How should it work, given this agenda and the new approach toward development assistance?" To answer, the strategy identifies four strategic pillars. Contents note: Introduction; Context for the Strategy; IDA's Strategic; Approaches to Africa's Development Challenges; Recent Changes in IDA's Operating Environment; Trends in IDA's Lending and Analytical Work and Knowledge Management; Assessments of IDA's Performance; Lessons Learned; Substantive Lessons; Operational Imperatives; The Pillars of the Strategy : Sharpening IDA's

Costs
TransportationClass number: 388 Abstract: "Transport prices and costs in Africa"- Transport prices for most African landlocked countries range from 15 to 20 percent of import costs. This is approximately two to three times more than in most developed countries. It is well known that weak infrastructure can account for low trade performance. Thus, it becomes necessary to understand what types of regional transport services operate in landlocked African nations and it is critical to identify the regulation disparities and provision anomalies that hurt infrastructure efficiency, even when the physical infrastructure such as a road transport corridor exists. Transport Prices and Costs in Africa analyzes the various reasons for poor transport performance seen widely throughout Africa and provides a compelling case for a number of national and regional reforms that are vital to the effort to address the underlying causes of high transport prices and costs and service unpredictability seen in Africa. The book will greatly help supervisory authorities throughout the region develop and implement a comprehensive transport policy that will facilitate long-term growth. Contents note: Introduction and Overview; Trucking in Africa Compared with other Regions; Key Logistics and Market Characteristics of the Transport Corridors; Main Determinants of Transport Prices and Trucking profitability; The Impact of Cartels on Transport Prices and Quality; Transport Costs Determinants; The Imapct of Road Conditions on Transport Costs; The Trucking Market in Africa; Assessment of Policy Options; Implications for Economic and Fiscal Analysis and for Data Collection; Conclusions, Recommendations and the Role of International Development Agencies; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=13130 Hold
