MetaphysicsClass number: 121.68 Abstract: Michael Dummett’s book is the greatly expanded and recently revised version of his William James Lectures. Dumment regards the construction of a satisfactory theory of meaning as the most pressing task of contemporary analytical philosophy. In order to determine the correct shape for a meaning-theory, we must attain a clear conception of what a meaning- theory can be expected to do. Such a conception, says Dummett, will form “a base camp for an assault on the metaphysical peaks: I have no greater ambition in this book than to set up a base camp.”
“Fundamental issues of human understanding are pursued with moral passion and enormous energy by a real philosopher. The questions Dummett presses reach at least as far as the very limits of thought.”Contents note: Metaphysical Disputes over Realism

Spirit
TruthClass number: 193 Abstract: This brilliant study of the stages in the mind's necessary progress from immediate sense-consciousness to the position of a scientific philosophy includes an introductory essay and a paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of the text to help the reader understand this most difficult and most influential of Hegel's works. Phenomenology of Spirit is Hegel's grandest experiment, that changes our vision of the world and the very nature of the philosophical enterprise. In his own words, "This book demonstrates how knowledge arises... It includes the various shapes through which spirit becomes pure knowledge or absolute spirit." Seen by Hegel as a necessary fore piece to his philosophical system, its task was to run through, in a scientifically purged order, the stages in the mind's necessary progress from immediate sense-consciousness to the position of a scientific philosophy. Little wonder Hegel originally wanted this work titled as Science of the Experience of Consciousness. The sequence of phases to be studied in the Phenomenology therefore involves a fine blend of the contingently historical and the logically necessary. Its successive phases bring out what is logically implicit in its earlier phases. They also bring out a series of implications actually embodied in past history and in Hegel's own thought history. Metaphysics
