Human rightsClass number: 346.015 Abstract: This book examines the potential impact of human rights in the way the law interacts with families. Traditionally family law has been dominated by consequentialist/utilitarian themes. The most notable example of this occurs in the law relating to children and the employment of the "welfare principle". This requires the court to focus on the welfare of the child as the paramount consideration. Hitherto the courts and, to a certain extent, family law academics, have firmly rejected the use of the language of rights, preferring the discretion and child-centred focus of welfare. However, the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights via the Human Rights Act now requires family law to deal more clearly with the competing rights that family members can hold. In addition, it is clear that, to date, the courts have largely ignored or minimised the different demands that the HRA imposes on the judiciary and, in particular, judicial reasoning. This book challenges that view and suggests ways in which the family courts may improve their reasoning in this field. No longer can cases be dealt with on the basis of a simple utilitarian calculation of what is in the best interests of the child and other family members - greater transparency is required.
The book clarifies the different rights that family members can hold and, in particular, identifies ways in which it may be possible to deal with the clash of rights between family members that will inevitably occur. Whether this requires an abandonment of the utilitarian nature of family law, or a reworking of it, is a theme that runs throughout the book.Contents note: The European Convention on Human Rights and family law; The Human Rights Act : scheme, principles and implementation; Human rights in family law

Orwell, George (1903-1950)Class number: 828.9 Abstract: Orwell has become one of the most potent and symbolic figures in western political thought. Even the adjective 'Orwellian' is now a byword for a particular way of thinking about life, literature and language yet, despite this iconic status, the man who was born Eric Blair in 1903 remains an enigma. Drawing on a mass of previously unseen material, D J Taylor offers a strikingly human portrait of the writer too often embalmed as a secular saint. Here is a man who, for all his outward unworldliness, effectively stage-managed his own life; who combined chilling detachment with warmth and gentleness, disillusionment with hope; who battled through illness to produce two of the greatest masterpieces of the twentieth century. Moving and revealing, Taylor's Orwell is the biography we have all been waiting for, as vibrant, powerful and resonant as its extraordinary hero. School management and organizationClass number: 371.200941 Abstract: "Theories of educational leadership and management"- in this established text Tony Bush presents the major theories of educational management, and links them to contemporary policy and practice. Leadership continues to be one of the major criteria used to differentiate the models; but the author now makes clear links between educational management theories and the main models of leadership. The author applies the models to a range of international contexts, including both developed and developing countries. This relates to global interest in concepts of leadership and management and to an increasing recognition of the need to customize theory and practice to each context and culture rather than adopting a `one size fits all' approach. For the Fourth Edition, the essential conceptual models remain. New case study material has been added from the full range of education and non-school settings, from early years through to further and higher education. Each chapter now includes key words, summary and end of chapter materials including issues for discussion. Key terms are defined in-text for the non-expert reader and all references and relevant key legislation details have been fully updated. This book is essential reading for all teachers who aspire to management, as well as for experienced leaders on Masters' level courses, and for those studying school management as part of education studies degrees. Contents note: The importance of leadership and management for education; Models of educational leadership and management; Formal models; Collegial models; Political models; Subjective models; Ambiguity models; Cultural models; Conclusion; Record link: https://library.seeu.edu.mk/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=19004 Hold
