Within this discussion a host of correlations emerge, crossing social, cultural, historical, political, and racial spheres. In order to anchor their discussion Borisoff and Chesebro define the terms gender, power, and communication, which provides an operational platform from which to view fundamental issues such as the effects of stereotyping and verbal and nonverbal communication by gender. The authors also consider four contexts that shape and influence gender socialization and sex-role constructions: mediated communication and gender roles in various media systems, early socialization in the home, the educational landscape, and women and men in the workplace. Gjithçka në fakt është komunikim. Njerëzit nuk janë në fillim si të tillë dhe pastaj të nisin të komunikojnë; ne jemi si na ndërton në çdo çast komunikimi me të tjerët. Secili e kupton veten duke e parë me sytë e tjetrit. Edhe i vetmuar, ai është me veten e tij që nuk i ndahet si një "mbi – urë" dhe bisedon pareshtur me të. Shoqëria është vepër e krijesë e komunikimit të individëve me njëri – tjetrin, një "pëlhurë" që endet nëpërmjet komunikimit të përditshëm të njerëzve me njëri – tjetrin. Jemi "të dënuar" të komunikojmë si njerëz, por çdo objekt, i gjallë ose jo, edhe pavetëdije, lëshon sinjale, përbën një shenjë që na thotë diçka. Objektet janë metagjuha, kurse shenjat gjuhësore nuk janë veçse një nënsistem i rëndësishëm i këtij universi gjigand semantik dhe semiotik që është vetë bota. Komunikimi na bën ta shohim botën dhe shoqërinë krejt ndryshe nga më parë.
