Demokracia li-berale është sundimi i shumicës pa përfshirë rreziqet e saj mbi pakicat e mbrojtura dhe të Drejtat e garantuara të Njeriut. Feja liberale është një besim i çliruar nga dogma dhe një kishë që njeh ligjshmërinë e kishave të tjera. Nacionalizmi liberal është tamam e kundërta e ideologjisë fetare ose shoviniste. Një re-volucion liberal është i butë; ai nuk përfundon kurrë në një sundim terrori. Autoritarizmi liberal përshkruan një regjim antidemokratik, që krijon hapësirë të kufizuar për mosma-rrëveshje politike dhe liri individuale (dhe ndoshta mbështe-tet nga qeveria amerikane). E majta liberale i është nënshtruar nocioneve ideologjike të ortodoksisë Marksiste. E djathta libe-rale është të paktën e gatshme të tolerojë të majtën liberale. Vetë liberalizmi është më tepër se shuma e gjithë këtyre an-tidoteve. Shumë prej kritikëve të tij mendojnë se ai nuk është trajtuar siç duhet, por gabojnë. Historia e politikës liberale është e ndërlikuar dhe me konflikte dhe fundi i kësaj historie është një doktrinë thelbësore dhe e fuqishme. Megjithëse disa veçori shumë të rëndësishme të jetës njerëzore janë lënë jashtë. ReligionClass number: 322.261 Abstract: As an American Jew, I grew up thinking of myself as an ob ject of toleration. It was only much later that I recognized myself as a subject too, an agent called upon to tolerate others, including fellow Jews whose idea of what Jewishness meant differed radically from my own. My dawning sense of the United States as a country where everyone had to tolerate everyone else (a formula I shall explain later on) was the starting point of this essay. It led me to reflect on the ways in which other countries were different, and only sometimes intolerably different. All the world is not America! Tolerating and being tolerated is a little like Aristotle's ruling and being ruled: it is the work of democratic citizens. I don't think that it is easy or insignificant work.
