Më dukej se nëqoftëse ne, si komb, s'do të jemi në gjendje t'i japim përgjigjen e duhur kësaj pyetje të rëndësishme - Kush ishin ata? - asnjëherë s'do mundemi ta ndjejmë veten përsëri të sigurt dhe asnjëherë nuk do të jemi në gjendje të marrim masat e duhura për ta mbrojtur veten nga një 11 shtator tjetër. Meraku i dytë ka të bëjë me dëshirën për të kuptuar dhe shprehur më mirë se kush jemi ne - ne, amerikanët. Jam përpjekur të shqyrtoj veçoritë që kemi si vend - veçori që na ndihmuan për ta kapërcyer këtë krizë, por që shpjegojnë gjithashtu pse ishim objektivi i zemërimit dhe i xhelozisë së të tjerëve. Ky libër është rezultat i këtij hulumtimi personal. Ai ndahet në tre pjesë. Pjesa e parë përfshin një prolog dhe njëmbëdhjetë shkrime të shkruara para 11 shtatorit; shpresoj se këto analiza do ta ndihmojnë lexuesin për të kuptuar më mirë kontekstin e 11 shtatorit dhe arsyen pse përqasja ime ndaj tij është e tillë. Pjesa e dytë përfshin praktikisht gjithë shkrimet që kam bërë 13 shtatorit 2001 deri më 20 prill 2003. Ato paraqiten sipas rendit kronologjik, ashtu siç janë botuar në New York Times. Ato që u shkruan jashtë vendit përmendin dhe emrin e qytetit ku ndodhesha. Pjesa e tretë përbëhet nga ditari që mbajta gjatë muajve të dhimbshëm e të trazuar menjëherë mbas 11 shtatorit, kur udhëtova nëpër botën arabe dhe myslimane. Meqënëse, si kronist, shkruaj vetëm dy herë në javë, me 740 fjalë për artikull, unë grumbulloj shumë më tepër material dhe kam shumë më tepër takime interesante nga ç'jam në gjendje të përfshi në shkrimet e...
